The Meeting of Conference of Philosophical Societies (CoPS)

December 27, 2004, Boston

Place: Northeastern (Third Floor), Boston, Massachusetts

Time: 20.00-22.30, December 27, 2004

Participants:

G. John M. Abbarno, Jurate Baranova, Mary J. Clark, Hu Yeping, Thomas Magnell, William McBride, George F. McLean, James Rutherlord, David E. Schrader, David Seiple, Kevin Stoele

The meeting was chaired by Prof. Abbarno, President of the Conference of Philosophical Societies. First, he reported on the past activities of the CoPS and projected the future work, namely, to bridge between the various philosophical societies in order to enable dialogues or cooperations in relation to present national and broader cultural concerns for human identity and meaning.

Prof. McLean spoke on the emergence and significance of cultural traditions and civilizations; the importance of the evolution of philosophical concerns; and how CoPS could play a role in linking philosophical societies in concrete response to human concerns. These include the contribution of philosophy to reflection on one’s own culture and on relations to other cultures, on the search for points of convergence and complementarity, respect for pluralism and diversity, i.e., the classical philosophical issue of the one and the many as lived in today’s global content.

Prof. Magnell emphasized the mission of the CoPS, namely to bring all the societies together to study common concerns. The CoPS need to continues its work concretely such as the Philosophical Calendar. Prof. Magnell also mentioned some international work as developed by the Value Inquiry, in Briton, Moscow.

Prof. Schrader introduced the work of the International Society for Value Inquiry in China and Mexico and its plans to continue its work in the international dimension. Prof. Schrader noted how societies with multiple patterns need to be viewed and reflected upon not just by parts, but as a whole. Critical philosophy can help understand the historical development of social life in terms of its values.

Prof. McBride, the General Secretary of The International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP), introduced the work of FISP, its past activities and its contemporary challenges. Prof. McBride has developed a website for the FISP and is interested in collaboration with regional philosophical societies.

The participants reelected Prof. Abbarno as the President of the CoPS, and Hu Yeping as its Secretary.

It also decided to issue a printed version of the Philosophical Calendar twice a year (January and June).
