The Meeting of Conference of Philosophical Societies (CoPS)

December 27, 2003, Washington, D.C.

Place: Washington Hilton, Georgetown East Hall, Washington, D.C.

Time: 20.00-22.00, December 27, 2003

Participants:

John M. Abbarno (Chair), Thomas Magnell, Stuart A. Umpleby, George F. McLean, Peter Boltuc, Hu Yeping and others

1. Presentation:

The meeting began with a presentation given by Professor Peter Boltuc on the implications of philosophy for social action and his experience on how to promote students engaging in the community building, especially in courses on  “Social Capital” and “Critical Thinking”. This was followed by a discussion on philosophy as theory and practice.

2. Business meeting:

1. The President of CoPS, Professor John Abbarno, introduced briefly the activities and plans of CoPS. He gave thanks to Professor Nancy Simco for her devotion to the printed Philosophical Calendar and other works of the CoPS all these years and Professor Kevin Stoehr who took over the electronic version of Philosophical Calendar and initiated the webpage  (www.crvp.org) maintained by the Council for Research in Values and Philosophy (RVP). Professor Abbarno urged CoPS members to contribute their new ideas regarding activities in the coming year (address: abbarnojo@dyc.edu).

            (2) George F. McLean, one of the founding members of CoPS, made the following proposal which was unanimously accepted.

-               The multiple philosophical societies were founded largely after 1950 in response to the increasing specialization of work in this field. In 1970s Cops was founded to provide a way for them to cooperate.

-               This was first and foremost a matter of providing information about what each society was doing separately through the development of the Philosophical Calendar listing conferences and distributed in print and on the web, as well as being reprinted in the FISP bulletin.

-               Now in the postmodern world the sciences, physical and social, seem no longer adequate to address the newly emerging issues of human rights and dignity, culture and values, and the global dialogue of civilizations, which have become the present preoccupations of humankind.

-               It is proposed therefore that Cops establish a sub-committee to explore and promote research cooperation on such issues between its specialized society members. The Council for Research in Values and Philosophy (RVP) would share its experience in the development of related teams and assure publication of the resulting work.

(3) Elected new board members:

President: John Abbarno

Treasurer: Nancy Simco

Secretary: Hu Yeping

Sub-Committee on research cooperation: George F. McLean (Chair), John Abbarno, Thomas Magnell and Hu Yeping
