ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Council for Research in Values and Philosophy (RVP) wishes to acknowledge the rich contribution of the Institute of Philosophy of The Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences to the joint colloquium on which this volume is built. This first step in the sense of colloquia rightly reaches back to the traditions to find resources for facing the problems which come with any change, perhaps especially that of modernization. It is a fine beginning to be built upon in the years to follow.

For these discussions the late Emilio Savogin of Cheung Chau Island as gracious host provided the perfect atmosphere for profound reflection.

Hu Yeping and Nancy Graham cooperated to prepare and correct the manuscript.

All have a vote of thanks.
