CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF CULTURE AND VALUES

 

 

Goals:  

·        To understand oneself: to be aware of and to unfold the cultural values that shape our aspirations and motivate our actions.

·        To appreciate others: to develop positive attitudes toward other cultures.

·        To build cooperation among peoples: to work on issues of harmony and relations between peoples with a view to healing deeper tensions and promoting positive peace within nations and on a global scale.

 

Objectives:  

·        To mobilize research teams to study the general nature, interpretation and development of cultures.

·        To organize sets of scholars specializing in the cultural heritages of national groups.

·        To add to the regional sets of research teams in America, Europe, Central and Eastern Europe, and Central and East Asia, new teams in the Balkans, the Caucasus, Russia, Southeast Asia, Africa and Islam to apply cultural heritages to the challenges of contemporary change around the world.

·        To provide graduate education to a new generation of professors and leaders, not only in specialized fields, but to relate this to their own cultural heritages.

 

Operations:  

·        Continuation and expansion of the research teams of the Council for Research in Values and Philosophy (RVP) which produce cooperative volumes and meet annually for mutual critique and planning.

·        Joint colloquia and workshops in university centers.

·        Annual 10-week seminars in Washington, D.C., comprising representatives from the international teams.

·        Worldwide conferences to identify and explore issues of cultural transformation.

·           Publication and dissemination of the results of this research and critical reflection.
